A few senators from the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) are accused of disclosing the distribution of funds collected from colleges and universities in order to approve their 2025 budgets.
Even though the National Assembly denied extorting colleges, some members told Premium Times that they received $1,000 in “appreciation money” but didn’t know where it came from until the publication’s article revealed the corruption’s persistence.
According to the previously cited article, the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND and the House Committee on University Education called for ₦8 million from every federal university in the nation. Lawmakers allegedly collected ₦480 million from university heads and threatened to “deal” with vice-chancellors who refused to participate, according to the probe.

Although many members consider such payments to be routine, some lawmakers reject them, according to another lawmaker who echoed that statement. According to the source, there are two senators from Sokoto and Lagos who do not participate in the money-sharing.
Another group of National Assembly committees reportedly raised ₦528 million from 66 polytechnics and colleges of education in order to approve their budgets, according to the aforementioned website.
