The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership met with President Bola Tinubu and Progressive Governors Forum governors at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday, accelerating political reorganizations ahead of the general elections in 2027.
The Progressive Governors hosted the summit, which was set to start at 11:00 a.m. at the State House Banquet Hall. Tinubu was to be the Special Guest of Honor.
The invitation to the NLC leadership is often interpreted as an attempt to strengthen communication between the federal government, state governors, and organized labor during a period of political reorientation and economic hardship.
The summit’s goals, according to people familiar with the gathering who talked to Vanguard, are to promote stakeholder cooperation, governance discourse, and inclusive involvement in national development projects.
“The NLC leadership intends to personally present its charter of demands to the President,” a labor source revealed.
As Nigeria undergoes economic and environmental changes, the charter allegedly asks for pay raises as well as the preservation of jobs and livelihoods.
In addition, it calls for the development of a special Just Transition Fund, the creation of green jobs, reskilling initiatives, improved social safety nets, and formalized three-way communication between the government, employers, and labor.
