At least 68 polo players from South Africa, England, Argentina, and Nigeria are scheduled to participate in the 2025 Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament.
From January 12 to 18, the Port Harcourt Polo Club, in partnership with the Nigerian Polo Association (NPA), will host the competition.
One of Nigeria’s main marquee events, the tournament has drawn polo fans and patrons from both inside and beyond the country over the years.
The tournament’s motto, “Unity in Motion,” intends to give polo fans around the country a fun and exciting experience, according to Prince Henry Agbodjan, president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club.
He also mentioned that in addition to the matches, spectators might anticipate entertainment performances and chances to buy reasonably priced goods from the tournament’s MMO.
“The occasion will provide a significant commercial boost to the economy of Rivers State,” Agbodjan said.
To further promote polo in Nigeria, he called on the media to spread awareness and thanked the Rivers Government and tournament sponsors for their assistance.
The announcement was made Wednesday at a news conference in Port Harcourt by Dolapo Attoni, the chairman of the tournament’s Local Organising Committee (LOC).
This year’s competition, which featured the best polo players from Nigeria and throughout the world, was anticipated to outperform past iterations, according to Attoni.
Attoni stated that eight players from Argentina, England, and South Africa, along with roughly 60 players from 20 teams throughout Nigeria, will compete for four trophies and other awards.
Eight teams from Rivers, three from Lagos, one from Nasarawa, and two each from Adamawa, Plateau, Kano, and Katsina were among the teams that Attoni highlighted.

The teams fall into three categories: low, medium, and high goal.
They will vie for four trophies: the Governor’s Cup, the TJT Princewill Cup, the Alfred Diette Spiff Cup, and the TY Danjuma Cup.
“Sponsors and individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth of polo in Nigeria will also be recognized, and winners and runners-up will receive trophies, medals, and individual prizes,” he continued.
The Port Harcourt Polo Club’s vice president, Attoni, stated that games will be played every day from noon to six o’clock.
Ikenna Nebolisa, the captain of the Port Harcourt Polo Club, expressed confidence in his team’s preparedness for competition.
“Our horses and players are ready to win and make our supporters proud,” he said in closing.
