The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the major opposition party, is now prepared to announce on August 25, 2025, the zoning formula it would use for the general election in 2027.
According to the PDP’s schedule of events, the zoning committee, which is chaired by Senator Duoye Diri, the governor of Bayelsa State, is scheduled to meet this week in Abuja to discuss the assignment, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
The paper, which was signed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Hon. Umar M. Bature, stated that the events will take place between August 24 and December 2025, according to The Nigerian Tribune.
The party’s constitution’s Section 7(2)(c) outlines the zoning principles: “The party shall follow the policy of rotation and zoning of party and public elective offices in pursuance of the principle of equity, justice, and fairness.”
Key PDP stakeholders have received copies of the program, which details the events leading up to the national convention in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on November 15–16.
The National Working Committee (NWC) and the PDP National Caucus will hold separate meetings on August 24 to kick off the main festivities.
In particular, the NWC will discuss topics for the party’s 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which is set for August 25.
The paper indicated that the study and adoption of the Diri-led zoning committee’s decision would be the main topics of the meeting.

The materials also highlight other key actions, such as holding party primaries to select candidates for elections and holding congresses at the ward, local, state, and zonal levels to form executives who will be overseen by the PDP’s state and national executive committees.
According to sources who spoke to The Nigerian Tribune, the zoning committee will meet in Abuja on Thursday, August 14, to suggest a zoning formula that will be submitted to the NEC for approval.
According to reports, the zoning formula will be revealed in the midst of growing rumors that former President Goodluck Jonathan might enter the race again and the highly anticipated attempts to enter the race by the governors of Oyo and Bauchi states, Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, respectively.
Eddy Olufeso, a former national vice chairman, told the Nigerian Tribune that the PDP was making a concerted effort to reclaim its top spot in the country’s political hierarchy.
“We are well prepared,” he remarked. By identifying the problems the nation has and making sure we provide solutions, we are making a concerted effort to pull the nation out of its current predicament. Our determination and our position as the underdog will allow us ample time to consider these issues and improve our collaboration with the Nigerian people.
We know where and when to go at any given time since our party has historical roots. We have a strong commitment.
Olafeso stated, “If the presidency comes from the South, definitely the national chairman will not come from the South,” in response to the question of whether the PDP’s presidential candidate should be from the North or the South.
“He has the right to contest,” he said when asked if Umar Ilya Damagum, the acting national chairman, should run for substantive chairmanship. However, the world has the last say. The PDP is not a one-man show; it is the party of the people.
