The second edition of the Gymfest Gymnastics Championship, which is slated to take place in Lagos on November 1, is expected to feature at least 300 gymnasts.
As per reports, the eagerly awaited competition, which will include contestants ranging from pre-level 1 to level 7, intends to highlight Nigeria’s developing gymnastics skills and motivate the upcoming generation of athletes, some of whom are as young as three years old.
This year’s competition will also serve as a platform to promote discipline, teamwork, and national solidarity among young athletes, according to the organizers.
Sports fans, coaches, parents, and administrators will also gather at the tournament to talk about how gymnastics may promote youth growth and enhance Nigeria’s athletic culture.
Speaking before to the competition, Sarah Boulos, co-convener of the championship, explained that Gymfest is a long-term initiative aimed at raising gymnastics standards in Nigeria.
“Gymfest is a movement that aims to raise the bar for gymnastics in Nigeria and develop young athletes into elite athletes, not just a competition,” she stated.
The initiative’s foundation is youth development and sustainability, Boulos emphasized.
She went on, “We want to create a long-lasting gymnastics pathway in Nigeria that builds confidence, promotes participation, and develops the next generation of champions.”
Additionally, Boulos urged greater parental participation, emphasizing that home support is essential to developing successful athletes.
We are advocating for gymnastics and educating parents about how it is an excellent starting point for all other sports. According to her, gymnastics helps kids acquire critical social, mental, and physical abilities.
Early involvement in the sport, she continued, can aid in children’s development of confidence, discipline, and agility that they can use in various facets of their lives.
Gymfest is a gathering place for all sports enthusiasts, from parents to professional coaches, according to Yoyin Akpose, the event’s program director.
Akpose stated, “Gymfest celebrates and promotes the growth of gymnastics in Nigeria by bringing together parents, coaches, gymnastics enthusiasts, and supporters.”
According to her, the competition is fostering a community dedicated to seeing Nigeria succeed on the international gymnastics scene in addition to awarding medals and trophies.
