According to Laolu Akande, a former spokesperson for former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) appears uninterested in taking his terrorism case to court.
In response to Kanu’s announcement that he would defend himself before Abuja Federal High Court Judge James Omotosho, Akande made this statement on Thursday.
Following the withdrawal of his principal attorney, Kanu Agabi, from the trial, Kanu made the choice.
During an appearance on Channels Television, Akande responded to the development by saying that Kanu is more concerned with finding a political solution to his protracted trial.
“It’s obvious that Kanu is not interested in pursuing this case because of the way he and his attorneys behaved after they stated that they wanted a speedy trial and that you have a judge who is prepared to make the right decision. Then this is what you guys are working out, you want to represent yourself?” Akande said. That indicates to me that he has no interest in taking the matter to trial.
There are persons who have acted similarly to Kanu and had their cases resolved politically, so he is interested in a political solution and it does have some merit.
I suppose he is more interested in that. If you follow the case’s development, you’ll see that some of the shenanigans on both the government’s and his own sides—such as switching lawyers back and forth—have contributed to the length of time it has taken.
“I believe we should investigate the political solution.” Kanu is obviously being dragged out, and I think we should look at a political solution for the sake of our national unity, not because I don’t think he should have his day in court.
