Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), has attributed the Niger tanker disaster to inadequate community leadership.
According to reports, 42 persons were killed and more than 60 injured in Tuesday’s gasoline truck explosion in Essa hamlet, Katcha Local Government Area, Niger State.
On the rundown Bida–Badeggi–Agaie Road, a tanker derailed and exploded as locals tried to collect the fuel, causing the regrettable occurrence.
In an interview with Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, the DG discussed the issue and called it “frustrating” and preventable.
“We anticipated it, but it’s really annoying. Issa-Onilu stated, “The President gave us a marching order to perform a statewide sensitization after the Dikko explosion (earlier this year) in Niger State.
According to him, the agency has consulted with youth organizations, security agencies, religious leaders, and community leaders.

Issa-Onilu mentioned that the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the agency met to discuss safety protocols.
He clarified that new rules were already being developed by downstream petroleum agencies to stop these kinds of accidents.
The NOA DG called the practice of collecting fuel from downed tankers illegal and immoral.
With the comment that “it happened in Dikko recently; it shouldn’t happen again,” he questioned, “Why do you go near a spillage when you know the risk involved?”
He emphasized that spilled gasoline is private property and that stealing it is theft, and he stated the behavior demonstrated the deterioration of moral standards in society.

“Even that fuel is someone’s property.” Taking it constitutes theft and is punishable by law, Issa-Onilu stated.
He asserts that community members ought to help salvage goods just to benefit the owner and not to profit from them.
“It’s past a tanker that has fallen. It’s a problem that affects the entire society and is linked to value orientation,” he continued.
