Barr is the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister. While confirming major progress on important infrastructure projects in the N2 and N5 corridor, Nyesom Wike announced on Monday that the ongoing enforcement for payment of ground rent and other statutory fees will cease this week with no additional extensions.
Wike reiterated that the FCT’s internal budget is the only source of funding for Abuja’s ambitious development drive while speaking during an inspection visit of ongoing building projects by Julius Berger and Leventis.
“Certainly, it has to be the last time,” the minister said in response to circulating notices regarding the enforcement of ground rent. Sadly, the majority of Nigerians that voice complaints do not wish to follow the regulations.
Without tax payments, we are unable to complete these projects. Although we gave it an extra two or three weeks, it is already longer than four months. This is the final instance in which we will not be extending.
Properties whose owners don’t comply run the possibility of being sealed, he cautioned.
Wike was pleased with Julius Berger’s work rate at the N5 corridor, pointing out that a project that had been halted for years had suddenly advanced.
“We were present when this bridge was being built a number of years ago. However, we are currently on the bridge. Julius Berger has promised that N5 will be delivered by the end of January.
We are quite pleased with the caliber of the completed work.
The minister revealed earlier that the contractor is on schedule to finish the Central Area–Wuse connection road project, which is being managed by Leventis, by early June.
“The head work is still ongoing, but they promised to finish it by the end of May or the first week of June. This road is crucial since it links Wuse to the center area.
Wike stressed that the national budget is not supporting the current surge of construction in the Federal Capital Territory, despite popular belief.
“The FCT 2025 budget is being implemented.” We are making use of that.
Although we anticipate receiving those money by year’s end, we have not gotten a single penny from this year’s national budget.
He also mentioned that the FCT budget’s emergency funding resources are being used to build the Central Area–Wuse connection road.
Concerns regarding the lack of activity at recently opened bus terminals were addressed by Wike, who stated that the problem was procedural and would be fixed shortly.
“It’s an agreement. Purchasing is ongoing. We need to find out how many fleets they have. By God’s grace, that will have been completed by the end of the year.
It all comes down to following due process.
“Residents must play their part, but we’re delivering.”
When considering the rate of progress, Wike insisted that the administration has fulfilled its promises.
“There are no issues with carrying out the budget. The work is proceeding as scheduled. However, locals have to pay their taxes. You must satisfy your commitments in order to enjoy these projects.
