Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), the vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin, yesterday called on the US government to provide Nigeria with equipment and technology so that the country may effectively combat insecurity.
“I urge the American government to assist the Nigerian government with technology and equipment both software and hardware to defeat the monsters that make our lives nasty, brutish, and short,” as philosopher Thomas Hobbes would describe the “State of nature” that appears to be our lot at this critical time, Egbewole said in response to a question from a reporter.
He proposed that a “Cobra Effect” might be produced by anything other than US government support and that this should be avoided.
He emphasized that Nigerians must unite regardless of their political, religious, or ethnic backgrounds in order to address the nation’s problems with insecurity.
According to Egbewole, “the institution has made its mark within the past 50 years by recording a good number of firsts, including being consistently ranked the best university in Nigeria and the first Nigerian university to be ranked among the best 20 in Africa.”
He urged everyone involved to help the university achieve its goals, pointing out that they are in line with the “Strategic Plan of our Golden Age.”
