Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central, has criticized the estimate that 141 million Nigerians will live in poverty.
Sani stated in a post on his verified X handle on Thursday that it is ironic that the study is released at a time when Nigerian states and local governments are getting more funding than at any other point in the country’s history.
According to reports, the dire forecasts were supported by the Nigeria Economic Outlook 2026 report, “Turning Macroeconomic Stability into Sustainable Growth.”
A staggering 141 million people, or 62% of the population, are predicted to live in poverty by 2026.
“The PricewaterhouseCoopers, PwC report that about 141 million Nigerians are expected to live below the poverty line is alarming,” the former congressman responded. That represents more than half of this nation’s population.
Ironically, this report is released at a time when LGs and the States are getting more funding than at any other point in the nation’s history. In order to stop a national social revolt, this time bomb needs to be addressed.
