Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a senator from Kogi Central, has denounced the arrest and purported custody of 52 students from Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, calling it a serious attack on democratic principles and youth involvement.
The congressman stressed that nonviolent protest and civic engagement should never be criminalized in a solidarity statement released on Tuesday, January 13, warning that the repression of student voices through arrests and incarceration poses a severe threat to democracy.
Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that the only viable route to peace and prosperity is still genuine discussion rather than force, especially when young people express worries about their future.
“Dialogue, not detention, is the pathway to peace and progress,” she declared. Speaking up and demonstrating about issues that impact their environment, welfare, and future shouldn’t be criminalized.
“We call for their prompt release from custody.”
The senator criticized the way Edo State officials handled the tragedy and called on the government to shift its emphasis back to the state’s citizens’ deteriorating security condition.
She said that the increasing number of abductions and other violent crimes should take precedence over what she called the silencing of brave voices.
“Instead of stifling wise and brave voices, the government of Edo State should concentrate on addressing the concerns of kidnappings and other forms of insecurity,” she said.
Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that peaceful protest is still a constitutionally protected right and a crucial instrument for accountability, particularly for students and young people whose lives and futures are directly impacted by the results of government.
“Silencing students through arrests only deepens mistrust and widens the gap between the governed and the government,” she continued. The responsible answers are involvement and open communication.
The senator reiterated her support for the jailed students and their families, pointing out that her intervention is consistent with her long-standing dedication to democratic freedoms, justice, and youth empowerment.
It stated that after a well-planned nocturnal operation by Nigeria Police Force agents in Ekpoma, at least fifty-two students from Ambrose Alli University (AAU) were placed under detention in a prison.
The students were detained late at night and accused in court for allegedly taking part in a demonstration against the deteriorating security conditions in Edo State that had taken place the week before.
In response, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) denounced the students’ ongoing detention.
NANS called the detention “ridiculous, unacceptable, and deeply disturbing” in a statement released on Monday and signed by Adeyemi Ajasa, its national public relations officer.
The student body argued that people who exercise their constitutional right to peaceful protest shouldn’t face psychological damage, intimidation, or harassment.
The Edo State Police Command, however, defended their actions by saying that thugs had taken over the rally.
The police said that during the demonstration, the alleged thugs attacked vendors, set fire to tires, and damaged the palace of Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, the Onojie of Ekpoma.
