President Bola Tinubu has urged the Nigerian military to retain the fundamental principles of discipline, loyalty, and togetherness, characterizing the Armed Forces as the nation’s defenders of democracy and a lasting emblem of Nigeria’s might.

At the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Gala and Award Night, the President reaffirmed his administration’s steadfast commitment to assisting the military in establishing enduring peace and stability across the country through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

“It is my responsibility as your Commander-in-Chief to uphold the discipline, loyalty, and unity that characterize you as members of the armed forces. “You continue to be the enduring symbol of our shared strength in a diverse nation like ours,” President Tinubu declared.

Additionally, he exhorted the military to uphold the Constitution and fulfill their duty as unifying guardians with the same commitment as they do in protecting Nigeria’s borders.

“I implore you to uphold our democracy and Constitution. Our strength as a nation is found in our unity, so your duty as guards of our unity is just as important as your role as border defenders,” Tinubu continued.

The President emphasized that the well-being of soldiers is closely related to the security of the country and promised them better living conditions, better training, and better equipment.

He declared, “Your welfare is inseparable from national security,” and promised to keep helping the military to improve their operational capabilities.

He also reassured the staff that his administration will keep providing tangible resources and support to match their sacrifices.

President Tinubu emphasized that the names of fallen heroes who gave their lives to protect the nation are remembered not just on monuments but also in the hearts of all Nigerians.

The President declared, “Your names are etched not only on monuments but in the hearts of Nigerians.”

He emphasized that remembering the fallen soldiers should not be viewed as a ceremonial practice but rather as an ongoing national obligation.

The President also recognized the sacrifices made by military families, characterizing their assistance as a crucial cornerstone of the country’s defense.

President Tinubu declared the approval of two national engagement programs, “Thank-A-Soldier Electronic Wall” and “My Nigerian Hero Campaign,” in appreciation of the military’s contributions.

These programs are intended to give Nigerians a venue to thank service members and veterans for their commitment to the nation.

The President reassured Nigerians that the government would not back down until every person could live and work in safety and dignity while underlining the advancements made under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Several prizes were given to outstanding active and former military people throughout the ceremony. Among the recipients were:

Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff (COAS)

Retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, former Army Chief

Retired Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, a former Army spokesperson

These people received recognition for their outstanding service to the nation and their important contributions to the military’s accomplishments.
