The Nigeria Police Force’s Kaduna State command has rejected accusations that more than 100 attendees were kidnapped by bandits during a church service in the state’s Kajuru Local Government Area, calling them untrue and purposefully fabricated to incite fear.
The believers were abducted at Kurmin Wali hamlet on Sunday after a church service, according to reports earlier on Monday, January 19.
However, Muhammad Rabiu, the Commissioner of Police, told reporters following the State Security Council meeting at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House that the claim was a lie being promoted by “conflict entrepreneurs.”
Rabiu asked the people making the claim to provide reliable information about the purported victims.
The police chief declared, “I challenge anyone making this claim to provide the names of the kidnapped persons and other pertinent particulars.”
He cautioned anyone spreading rumors to stop trying to sabotage the state’s current calm.
“The full wrath of the law will be meted out to anyone found spreading such falsehood with the intention of causing chaos,” Rabiu continued.
Speaking as well, Dauda Madaki, the Chairman of Kajuru Local Government Area, stated that after hearing the news, he promptly dispatched security personnel to the community only to find out that no such incident had taken place.
“I mobilized the police and other security forces to Kurmin Wali when we learned about the alleged incident. There was no sign of an attack when we went to the church where the claimed kidnapping occurred, Madaki stated.
He continued by saying that local youth and traditional authorities denied being aware of any kidnappings.
“I asked Mai Dan Zaria, the village chief, and he confirmed that no such attack occurred,” he stated.
“I also called the local youth leader, Bernard Bona, who told the accompanying press team that nothing of the sort occurred.”
Madaki further urged anyone disseminating the allegations to provide hard evidence.
Therefore, I’m challenging everyone to reveal the names of those who were abducted. He remarked, “I’ve been waiting for this list, but nobody has come forward.”
He said that people who were unhappy with Kajuru’s relative tranquility might have been the ones who spread the rumor.
“I think people who are dissatisfied with the relative peace Kajuru has been enjoying since the arrival of this administration are sponsoring the rumor of the kidnapping,” he continued.
The head of the council advised locals to keep their cool and carry on with their legal activities while alerting security services to any suspicious activity or rumor-mongers.
In response, Sule Shuaibu (SAN), the Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, stated that religious authorities, including the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, had traveled to the area to confirm the allegations.
“They engaged with the local population and discovered that the information being disseminated to the public was wholly untrue,” Shuaibu stated.
He reassured locals that “the Kaduna State Government has zero tolerance for criminality” and emphasized that security forces are still on guard throughout the state.
