Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has denounced the frequent failure of Nigeria’s national electricity system, calling it a national shame and proof of persistent leadership shortcomings.
Obi stated in a post on his official X account on Saturday that January 2026 has started with yet another system failure following several grid crashes in 2025.
He called the development a persistent source of shame for the nation.
Obi also bemoaned Nigeria’s inadequate access to energy, pointing out that the nation ranked lowest in the world between 2023 and 2025, with around 100 million Nigerians living without power.
“The fact that our country still has the lowest access to electricity, leaving millions in the dark, is completely disheartening,” he stated.
When comparing Nigeria to other African nations, Obi said that whereas South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria collectively produce more than 40,000 megawatts, Nigeria, which has a population of more than 240 million, only generates roughly 5,000 megawatts, which he claimed significantly restricts production.
He claims that poor leadership is to blame for the current power struggle.
“Continuous leadership failures are the direct cause of this power crisis,” Obi said.
Obi emphasized that strong leadership is essential for significant national advancement and advised Nigerians to select leaders based on competency and empathy in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
“It’s time to elect people who have the ability and commitment to change our nation,” he continued.
