Prominent African Democratic Congress (ADC) member Peter Obi has joined the ongoing demonstrations at the National Assembly in Abuja against the Senate’s refusal to require the electronic transmission of election results.

The National Assembly was reportedly overrun by demonstrators on Monday morning in protest at the Senate’s decision.

Speaking at the demonstration site, Obi criticized the Senate’s stance on the electronic dissemination of election results and urged senators to permit the election process to continue unhindered.

“Let the election proceed as it normally would,” Obi stated. Regardless of the result, we will accept it. Why create ambiguity after the procedure?

In an event known as “Occupy National Assembly,” young Nigerians and pro-democracy campaigners gathered outside the National Assembly’s entrance to protest the Senate’s decision to forbid the electronic transmission of election results.
There was reportedly a significant security presence at the demonstration, with members of the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, or NSCDC, stationed to keep the complex under control.

The demonstrators contend that electronic transmission is essential to Nigeria’s electoral process’s integrity, openness, and public trust, and they are requesting that the National Assembly reevaluate its stance on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill’s e-transmission clause.

Security personnel kept a careful eye on events at the site, and as of the time this report was filed, the demonstration was still peaceful.
