The Senate leadership, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has been accused by political activist and Islamic scholar Dr. Usman Bugaje of consistently sabotaging Nigeria’s democratic process through deceit and subpar legislative behavior.
Following a Supreme Court decision, Bugaje reportedly defended the ongoing effort to change the Electoral Act during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Tuesday.
He claimed that in order to improve electoral clarity and transparency—especially by requiring the electronic transmission of results in real time—the amendment was now required.
As you can see, Bugaje stated, “We now need to go back and amend the law for clarity, accuracy, and precision so that everybody will be clear because of that Supreme Court ruling.”
“The goal is to have a transparent election, and the best way to do that is to make sure that the results are ready online right away, in real time, so that everyone can see the precise distribution of votes.”
The House of Representatives, Bugaje added, has accepted the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recommendation to require real-time results transmission.
Nonetheless, he charged that the Senate was opposing the change.
“INEC has even gone so far as to request that results be transmitted in real time. The Senate has consistently been found to defraud or mislead people, but the House of Representatives has done just that,” he remarked.
Legislative lapses are alleged.
The activist also claimed that the Senate had a history of legislative failures, including disputes over budgetary procedures and tax legislation, which he claimed caused uncertainty in economic planning and governance.
We truly need to address this issue in light of this amendment. The Senate has been observed dozing off or engaging in dishonest behavior related to their primary duty of enacting laws on previous occasions, Bugaje stated.
“They have used the tax legislation to do that. By padding budgets, they have accomplished this, and as a result of the chaos they created, we currently have almost three budgets, none of which are truly functional. You are unaware of your true location.
“By not knowing which budget will be funded and which will be implemented, businesses are unable to plan.”
Bugaje demanded more examination of the Senate’s leadership, seeing it as a significant governance concern.
As a result, the Senate leadership in particular is currently the nation’s largest issue, and we must start to question their usefulness. He questioned, “What sort of careless behavior is this?
He further stated that even after the Electoral Act modification process, the matter would continue to be a topic of national discussion.
“Therefore, we will need to address that once we have reviewed the amendment,” Bugaje stated.
Across the nation, he maintained, there was growing public support for the need that election results be transmitted electronically.
