Key welfare provisions agreed upon in the recently renegotiated 2025 agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have been implemented by the Federal Government. One such provision is a 40% increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for lecturers at federal universities.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed this on Monday in a formal statement and instruction sent to federal university vice-chancellors.
The most recent development comes after months of discussions to prevent more strikes and improve conditions in the nation’s public tertiary institutions were ended on January 14, 2026, when the revised agreement was signed.
With effect from January 1, 2026, the Federal Government has approved a 40% rise in the consolidated academic allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, fulfilling its responsibility under the agreement, Alausa said.
While several federal universities have already started making wage changes to reflect the rise in allowances, the Minister noted that others are anticipated to do the same.
In order to guarantee that eligible academic staff members get the increased wages on time, vice-chancellors nationwide have now been explicitly instructed to incorporate the increase into their payroll systems.
The goal is to guarantee consistent implementation across the country. Every VC has been informed, and they are required to cooperate right away,” Alausa continued.
The Minister stated that the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), which is non-taxable and already included in the federal budget for 2026, must be implemented in addition to the CAA.
The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) has also issued a circular about the allowance, he claims, and it has been handled via all required statutory channels.
The academic climate, staff morale, and teaching, research, and learning results in Nigerian universities will all improve with the prompt implementation of the CAA and CATA, according to Alausa.
Stressing that the action is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Education Minister reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to upholding agreements made with education sector stakeholders.
Alausa stated, “We are focused on measurable improvements in the quality of higher education, industrial harmony, and transparency.”
A major step toward resolving long-standing issues within the university system has been taken with the adoption of the revised allowances. ASUU has repeatedly used inadequate funds and unfulfilled agreements as justifications for its strike activities.
The regulations are intended to promote industrial harmony and boost academic production in all of the country’s postsecondary institutions, according to the administration.
