On Wednesday, while flying a scheduled domestic trip from Lagos to Port Harcourt, an Arik Air Boeing 737-7GL aircraft had an in-flight engine issue, according to confirmation from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).
After being forced to divert, the aircraft, registered 5N-MJF, reportedly made a safe and incident-free landing at Benin Airport.
The NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, made the revelation in a statement.
During the cruise portion of the trip, the flight crew noticed unusual signals from one of the aircraft’s engines, the bureau said.
In accordance with standard operating procedures in the tight environment, the pilots performed a preventative shutdown of the impacted engine and decided to divert to the closest appropriate airfield.
After that, the plane touched down safely at Benin Airport, and all of the crew and passengers disembarked without incident. No injuries were noted.
Based on a first visual examination, the NSIB observed that the impacted engine had severe damage.
Based on an initial visual evaluation, first observations at Benin Airport indicate that the afflicted engine has considerable damage. The statement stated that the NSIB has started an investigation in accordance with its statutory authority and international norms under ICAO Annex 13.
In order to secure the aircraft and collect pertinent evidence, an assessment team had been sent to the spot, it was noted.
“To secure the aircraft, document evidence, interview pertinent personnel and witnesses, and recover flight data and cockpit voice recorder information, the assessment team is currently traveling to Benin,” the statement read.
The bureau further revealed that it is closely collaborating with Arik Air, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and other important parties to ascertain the chronology of events and pinpoint potential causes.
The investigation’s findings are anticipated to inform safety guidelines meant to stop future occurrences of this kind.
