The Federal Government allegedly ordered the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to halt enforcement activities regarding the regulation of alcoholic goods in 200ml PET bottles and sachets. However, NAFDAC has debunked this media allegation.
The agency emphasized that no such direction had been received from the Federal Government and characterized the release as misleading and inaccurate.
NAFDAC explained in a statement released on Wednesday that it maintained its operations within the parameters of its statutory mission and in accordance with the government directives that were formally communicated to it.
According to reports, the clarification came after a report based on a statement purportedly made in Abuja by Terrence Kuanum, the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, claiming the Federal Government had ordered a halt to enforcement actions related to the proposed ban on small-volume alcoholic drinks and sachet alcohol.
The assertion was vehemently denied by NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, who emphasized that the organization had not been given any directive to halt its regulatory operations.
The publication in question is inaccurate, deceptive, and does not accurately represent any official correspondence that the Agency has received from the Federal Government, she stated.
“The Agency has not at any point received a formal direction directing the cessation of any enforcement or regulatory actions concerning sachet alcohol.”
NAFDAC is still dedicated to protecting public health and making sure that the food and medicine industry complies with regulations, Adeyeye reaffirmed.
According to her, the agency fulfills its duties in a transparent manner, following the law and due process.
