As a serious threat to national security, the Society for Drug Abuse Enlightenment and Control has denounced the 2025 non-release of capital funding to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Ahmad Umar, the Executive Director of SODAEC, said in a statement released in Kaduna on Wednesday that the revelation resulted from the National Assembly Joint Committee on Drugs and Narcotics’s procedures.
“A calculated abandonment of Nigeria’s most critical line of defense against narcotics and insecurity” is how Umar characterized the situation.
He claims that after achieving significant operational victories, the NDLEA has been left to function without the financial backing necessary to continue its operations.
He pointed out that the agency has kept announcing widespread seizures of illegal substances and the destruction of cannabis fields around the nation under Mohammed Marwa’s direction.
“These weekly interdictions demonstrate what dedication and professionalism can achieve. However, finance cannot be replaced by dedication alone, Umar stated.
The fact that SODAEC currently employs less than 14,000 people to serve more than 200 million Nigerians worries the agency’s head.

Umar maintained that the NDLEA’s mandate encompasses intelligence collection, financial tracking, and prosecution, and that it has a wider security role than just seizing drugs.
He insisted that the agency should receive welfare and financing on par with or even better than that of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Department of State Services.
“Terrorism and banditry are fueled by drug money.” Economic crimes and corruption are also fueled by it. Attacking the core of various security threats is necessary to strengthen the NDLEA, he stated.
Umar further claimed that foreign partners, such as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, seemed to provide the agency with more operational support than local authorities.
He demanded that the reasons behind the agency’s 2025 capital allocation not being released be looked into right away.
In order to protect the NDLEA from what it called “annual budgetary volatility and administrative bottlenecks,” SODAEC also insisted that it be put on first-line charge.
The group called on state governors and local government chairmen to assume more responsibility in addressing drug misuse and trafficking within their domains, in addition to federal engagement.
