Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, cannot complain about due process because of the treatment he provided to the people throughout his term, according to Chidi Odinkalu, the former head of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission.
According to reports, El-Rufai is currently in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC), which verified this on Thursday.
Remember that on Wednesday, El-Rufai was freed on bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before being taken into custody by Department of State Services (DSS) agents.
He was subsequently turned over to the ICPC.
Odinkalu urged El-Rufai to take responsibility for his acts while in office in an interview with Channels Television.
While in office, El-Rufai allegedly handled people with exceptional impunity, irresponsibility, and brutality, according to the human rights activist.
“I’ll begin with the fundamental tenet that all citizens require due process and that all individuals ought to be treated equally under the law,” he stated.
In other words, if someone has done anything that calls for legal accountability—which I believe he [El-Rufai] has—no one should be given impunity only because of who they are, inside the political division, or because of their national status. To put it plainly, he ought to be subject to the proper proceedings.
Having clarified that, I must add that what I have said goes much beyond what Nasir El-Rufai allowed those he viewed as his detractors while he was governor of Kaduna State. He acted rashly, brutally, and with tremendous impunity toward others.
He has killed some of his victims, including as the late Dr. Rafael Galadima, who was kidnapped along with his wife and ransomed, I assume, a day before he was killed in 2019, three months after Dadiyata vanished from his undiscovered Kaduna house. On August 2 of this year, Dadiyata’s disappearance will have occurred precisely seven years ago.
“He converted localities from kingdoms to Emirates at his whim, essentially displacing non-Muslims from their communities and denying them the ability to assume leadership roles in those communities. These towns were primarily composed of Christians.
He expropriated the lands of some individuals. State officials destroyed or expropriated the homes of his political rivals. Nasir El-Rufai, in my opinion, is not the only person who can openly criticize due process.
“With all due respect, he was an abhorrent governor of Kaduna State. By the way, what’s wrong with him? Being in the same party as President Tinubu, he was the one who ran the most aggressive campaign to overthrow the existing administration.
He went to Chatham House and other places with President Tinubu in 2023. Who is prosecuting him, because he was a leading advocate for the dispensation?
