The Federal Capital Territory’s Minister, Nyesom Wike, has been accused by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of meddling in the current Area Council elections in Abuja.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s national publicity secretary, issued a statement in which the party criticized Wike for moving around the FCT’s voting stations under the pretense of “monitoring.”
The ADC claimed that the minister’s actions constituted direct meddling in the election process.
As a cabinet minister and well-known partisan, the party contended that Wike had no constitutional authority to influence how the election was conducted.
He is not a registered voter in the FCT, it added, and he claims that his presence at polling places runs the risk of frightening voters and election officials.
The statement stated that “Wike’s’monitoring’ exercise, following his unilateral imposition of a curfew on prospective voters, constitutes direct interference in the election.”
“Vexatious and meddlesome” is how the ADC characterized the minister’s attendance during voting.
According to the party, some security guards were working with governing party agents to repress and intimidate voters in various regions of the Federal Capital Territory.
Concerns were also expressed regarding interruptions to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV), which it claimed was unavailable during the results collection process.
“We believe this to be an odd coincidence and urge INEC to promptly restore complete IReV functionality, along with a transparent public explanation for the interruption,” the party said.
The ADC asked its supporters and party agents to maintain composure but vigilance during the proceedings.
They were advised to meticulously record any anomalies or occurrences that were noticed at polling places throughout the FCT.
As it put it, the party reaffirmed its dedication to protecting the election process’ purity.
