Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has called the passing of Barinada Mpigi, the senator for the Rivers South-East Senatorial District, a loss for the entire nation as well as the Ogoni people of Rivers State. He called the late senator “a dependable ally who stood by his friends, even during trying times.”
Senator Mpigi passed away last Thursday at the age of 64 following a brief illness.
The FCT Minister led the delegation of Rivers State leaders who visited Senator Mpigi’s wife, Mrs. Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and her children on Thursday. In a statement released in London by the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister pledged to support the family and make sure the deceased received a fitting funeral.
In addition to Senators Magnus Abe, Allwell Onyesoh, and Olaka Nwogu, the Minister was joined by his two sons, Jordan and Joaquin; Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Aaron Chukwuemeka; Felix Nweke; Kenneth Chikere; and Hon. Dum Deekor; and Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule.
“We are here as a delegation sent by the leader of Rivers State,” Wike stated, offering his condolences to Senator Mpigi’s wife and kids. In reality, Sergeant Awuse, Chief OCJ Okocha, and Chief Ferdinand Alabraba would have attended, but due to their advanced age, they were unable to. You don’t need to go ask anyone if Bari wants to change his mind if he says he won’t cooperate with you. He remains by his friends’ side no matter what. We truly need your husband to be here during this time, which is very regrettable. But God cannot be questioned.
“I had assumed he would triumph, but God is wiser than me. We can’t say anything today that will bring Bari back. I was actually telling one of our friends that Bari’s lowering is the first way we will know he is no longer with us. There are still some of us who maintain the conviction that anything is possible.
“God provides, God receives. I have faith that God will give you all the strength to endure this irreversible loss, which affects not only the Ogoni people in Rivers State but also Nigeria overall, just as we pray for God to grant us that strength.
“We will play our own part,” the Minister added in an emotional tone, promising to support the family. We shall remember Bari.
We shall be with you, but as I mentioned, it is our own grief. We’ll do what we can to make sure he gets a proper funeral.

In response, Patricia Mpigi, the deceased’s widow, expressed gratitude to the Minister for always supporting the family, adding, “I thank you for your presence and support.” I just want to say thank you. I am grateful for what you have done.
