The Abia State Government is working to modernize public transportation in the state by launching the Abia Connect Card, a cashless payment system for the Green Shuttle Bus Service.

Under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, the Ministry of Transportation is spearheading the program, which attempts to give locals a smooth commute.

The Abia Ministry of Information handles said in a statement released on Sunday by Information Commissioner Okey Kanu that the government views the development as a significant step in its efforts to create a digitized, transparent, and effective transportation environment.

The statement claims that the Abia Connect Card, sometimes referred to as the “Abia State Card,” removes the annoyances like delays, disagreements over change, and revenue leaks that come with cash payments.

We are making a conscious effort to avoid the inconveniences associated with using cash. The Abia Connect Card makes commuting as easy as tapping once. It is effective, dependable, and made to guarantee that everyone can use our public transportation system, the statement said.

Residents can presently get the first card for free at authorized agent locations and designated Green Shuttle terminals in Aba and Umuahia, according to the government.

To obtain the card, prospective users must show their ABSSIN; those without one may register through the Abia Pay portal.

Upon funding the card, commuters must touch it on the payment mechanism upon boarding, with a confirmation sound confirming a successful payment. This is subject to a ₦50 top-up charge.

The card has no expiration date, the money deposited onto it is always available, and the Green Shuttle Service runs both intra-city and inter-city routes, according to the statement.

The inter-city charges, according to Kanu, are ₦800 from Aba to Umuahia and ₦1,000 from Umuahia to Ohafia. City services in Aba and Umuahia run on specified routes for a fixed fee of ₦150.

The state administration stated that the move will improve accountability and transparency in the transportation sector and encouraged commuters to take advantage of the ongoing free card distribution.

“Our goal is still quite clear: to establish Abia State’s transportation system as a Nigerian model of creativity, effectiveness, and openness.

“I urge every resident to acquire their cards and participate in this revolutionary process towards a more intelligent Abia,” the statement continued.
