Through its “Operation Go Cashless” effort, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has implemented four digital payment methods at airport access gates around the country.
According to the authority, the measure is a component of initiatives to do away with cash transactions, boost operational effectiveness, and support Nigeria’s larger shift to a cashless economy.
In a statement posted on its official 𝕏 account on Tuesday, FAAN listed the authorized payment methods for drivers and airport patrons.
Four Accepted Payment Methods
The authority states that the following choices are available:
The FAAN Go Cashless Card is referred to as “the fastest and most seamless payment option.”
E-Tag: Designed with frequent users in mind, this feature allows immediate deductions without pausing at gates.
VIP Sticker: Applicable to vehicles with authorized access.
ATM/Debit Card via POS: Available on-site, though banking network issues may cause processing times to fluctuate.
FAAN said, “The following payment options are available to ensure smooth and efficient access.”
The Go Cashless Card is available to airport patrons at its commercial offices and certain access gates across the country, the agency added. It also revealed that via its portal, card management and registration are possible online.
On March 1, 2026, the cashless policy went into effect, prohibiting cash transactions at all FAAN payment locations, including executive lounges, parking lots, and toll gates.
Initially announced in September 2025, the idea was executed at major hubs including Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. It was started in collaboration with Paystack.
According to FAAN, the policy complies with Nigeria’s Central Bank’s directives to increase the country’s acceptance of electronic payments.
Notwithstanding the expected advantages, confusion and high traffic at the airports in Lagos and Abuja marred the first day of full implementation.
There have apparently been delays due to traffic congestion at entry gates, causing some passengers to miss planned flights.
When drivers came without prepaid cards, they had to rely on Point of Sale machines, which led to long lines and delayed processing times.
The congestion was exacerbated by network-related problems affecting POS transactions, which several airport users expressed frustration about.
However, FAAN insisted that service delivery would eventually be improved by the effort.
The authority emphasized that with increased transparency and less cash handling, the system is intended to make transactions “faster, safer, and more convenient,” potentially increasing revenue by up to 75%.
FAAN recommended frequent travelers to preload their Go Cashless cards ahead of time in order to reduce wait times at access gates.
At Nigeria’s main airports, travelers are currently acclimating to a new system in which cash is no longer king.
