Human rights advocate Femi Falana has suggested that the federal government collaborate with other nations to increase diplomatic pressure on the US for its involvement in the ongoing crisis between Iran and Israel.

He made the request on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today program.

Falana denounced US President Donald Trump’s conduct, claiming that he was violating UN resolutions and international law.

He called on the Nigerian government to cooperate with other nations to guarantee respect for international law and to persuade superpowers like China and Russia to step in to address the growing situation.

“President Trump disregards and disrespects international law. As a result, he has removed the United States from roughly sixty-six UN resolutions. The UN resolutions are meaningless to him,” Falana remarked.

The senior counsel stated that Nigeria should collaborate with other countries to promote moderation in order to reestablish its tradition of multilateral diplomacy, akin to the nation’s involvement during the Non-Aligned Movement.

As a nation, we have a responsibility to work with other nations, just as we did in the past. When it comes to the days of non-alignment, we need to act quickly to work with other nations in order to put pressure on Mr. Trump,” he stated.

Falana also emphasized the significance of convincing powerful nations like China and Russia to make diplomatic interventions, claiming that they had significant sway over Iran.

“China and Russia are the two nations that Iran will listen to, so we need to convince them to intervene,” he continued.

Falana urged Nigeria to fortify its internal security framework and lessen its dependence on outside forces for stability, going beyond the global aspect of the problem.

“Nigeria needs to awaken. We need to take a lesson from Iran: an imperialist nation like the United States cannot provide law and order in your nation unless you reorganize your own nation and equip your military forces and police force,” he stated.

Falana also questioned why Nigeria’s state-owned refineries were no longer in service despite billions of dollars being spent on their renovation, criticizing the nation’s handling of its refining capability.

“If we claim to have four refineries, no one is discussing them anymore.” The Dangote Refinery is currently the NNPC’s exclusive source of supply. Is that the way a nation is run? Approximately $2.9 billion was spent on the upkeep of our four refineries after money was wasted,” he stated.
