Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) championship was taken away from them by the Confederation of African Football, which sparked anger in Dakar and a determined refusal to return the trophy, sparking a full-fledged conflict in African football.
The CAF’s decision in the 2025 final, where hosts Morocco were given a 3-0 victory after the match was deemed a walkover, is reportedly the source of the issue. The ruling came after head coach Pape Thiaw authorized Senegal’s dramatic stoppage-time exit following Morocco’s late penalty.
