he Joint Labor Movement in Osun State has declared that its scheduled picketing of an Osogbo commercial bank branch has been postponed.
The Department of State Services, or DSS, mediated the change.
Following a meeting with bank representatives organized by the DSS in Osun State, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Chairman Christopher Arapasopo, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman Bimbo Fasasi, and the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) Chairman Lekan Adediran jointly released a statement outlining the decision.
In response to concerns about local government funding, the labor movement had already instructed its members to organize a nonviolent industrial action starting on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
“The directive followed resolutions reached at meetings of the State Administrative Council and State Executive Council held on March 17 at the Labour House in Osogbo,” the statement said.
However, both groups decided to postpone the scheduled picketing following lengthy discussions at the DSS-mediated engagement.
“That the planned UBA picketing of Tuesday, 24th March 2026 be suspended,” the statement stated.
It stated that representatives of the bank and organized labor will meet together.
It stated that within a week, from March 23 to 30, 2026, both parties had committed to holding thorough talks to settle the disagreement over local government funding.
Labour leaders stated that the suspension would continue for the same amount of time in order to provide space for discussion and potential settlement of the disputed issues.
Additionally, the labor chairpersons reaffirmed their dedication to nonviolent participation.
“The struggle continues — peacefully, lawfully, intelligently, and firmly,” the statement continued, exhorting participants to maintain their discipline and resolve.
The Joint Labour Movement expressed hope that the discussion will result in favorable outcomes and reaffirmed its dedication to upholding democratic values, economic justice, and social advancement.
In anticipation of a labor union demonstration over the continuing local government budget dispute, the All Progressives Congress, or APC, in Osun State put the state’s security forces on high alert on Saturday.
The warning came after the party released a statement urging preemptive steps to stop any disturbance of Osogbo’s public order.
The Joint Labour Movement’s leaders, comprising representatives of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), are organizing the protest, the party said in a statement released on Saturday by its Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi.
