Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, has reiterated the National Assembly’s support for the establishment of Anioma State, claiming that the plan had substantial legislative support.

At the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Congress in Asaba, Delta State, Akpabio made the statement while speaking to party members.

The Senate President stated that the 10th Senate has continued to consider the plan and that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is still dedicated to it.

He claimed that the establishment of Anioma State would result in better regional governance, balanced development, and administrative effectiveness.

According to Akpabio, if the plan is approved, Asaba will become the capital of the new Anioma State and Warri will serve as the capital of the reorganized Delta State.

He pointed out that Warri already has essential infrastructure that qualifies it for this kind of position.

He claims that the city contains a stadium, a seaport, government buildings, large oil firms, and an airport.

Asaba will serve as the capital of the new state of Anioma. The initiative led by Senator Ned Nwoko has the full backing of the Senate, according to Akpabio.

All of the member communities will enter a new phase of growth and prosperity as a result of this action. Warri will be the capital of the new Delta, with Asaba serving as the capital of Anioma State.

Numerous well-known political figures from throughout the area attended the congress.

The governors of the states of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River were there, along with other South-South zone officials and party stakeholders.

According to Akpabio, the movement for the establishment of Anioma State is historically valid since it represents a long-standing desire of the populace.

According to him, the plan is based on the ideas of decentralization, equity, and balanced development.

Additionally, the Senate President recognized Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents the Delta North Senatorial District, for his advocacy of the project.

Nwoko revealed in November 2025 that the National Assembly’s support for the establishment of Anioma State had grown significantly.

He described the level of support as extraordinary and stated that 97 senators had already signed a statement approving the plan.

He claims that the plan is already being examined by constitutional amendment committees as part of larger reforms.
