President Bola Tinubu sent a new loan request for $6 billion to the Senate, which approved it on Tuesday.
On the same day that Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the request letter, the senators reportedly accepted the new loan.
Senator Aliyu Wamakko, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, presented and reviewed the report before the Senate accepted the loans.
As previously reported, President Tinubu had written to the Senate requesting permission to borrow a total of $6 billion in order to fund important government initiatives and close budgetary deficits.
The demands were read at Tuesday’s plenary and were contained in two different letters to Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President.
The President asked for permission to borrow $5 billion from Abu Dhabi Bank in the first letter.
The President claims that among other fiscal responsibilities, the facility will be used to assist debt financing and close the country’s budget deficit.
The request is a component of the Federal Government’s attempts to maintain ongoing government initiatives and stabilize public finances.
Tinubu also requested permission to obtain a $1 billion UK Export Finance loan facility from London Citi Bank in a different correspondence.
The financing is meant to be used for the restoration of important port facilities, such as Tin Can Island Port and the Lagos Port Complex.
According to the President, the project intends to address significant infrastructure shortcomings in the nation’s maritime industry.
He claims that the renovation will support Nigeria’s ambitions to diversify its economy beyond oil and help increase efficiency and safety standards.
The project, he continued, will also improve Nigeria’s standing as a hub for regional trade.
The Upper Legislative Chamber has now reviewed and granted both requests.
