The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has come under fire from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for threatening to shoot Seun Okinbaloye, a broadcaster on Channels Television.
According to reports, Okinbaloye stated on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Thursday that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) turmoil was making the 2027 elections appear to be a race between a single political party.
He went on to say that if ADC, the only opposition chance, is unable to run in the 2027 election, Nigeria’s democracy is lost.
“I’m especially hurt because when the campaign is competitive rather than when just one party is in the middle of the ballot and we are searching for the other political parties, that’s what makes it so fascinating.
However, one of them speaks tonight about the state of ADC in particular, which appears to be one of the opposition’s only prospects for 2027. In terms of democracy, we are doomed if this hope is destroyed. Okinbaloye stated.
However, Wike said that Okinbaloye’s remark indicated he was taking sides in the issue engulfing the ADC during a media interaction on Friday in Abuja, the country’s capital.
“I would have shot him if there was a way to break the television screen,” he declared.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the spokesperson for the ADC, responded to Wike’s comments in a post via 𝕏 on Saturday, calling them reckless and unacceptable and emphasizing that they directly violate the right to free speech.
“Wike’s threat to shoot Seun Okinbaloye from Channels Television for performing his job as a journalist is irresponsible and unacceptable,” he said.
“Everyone who supports free expression must denounce this. They plan to start murdering journalists after dismantling opposition parties.
