Atiku Abubakar, who used to be Vice President, has called President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a hypocrite, a liar about history, and politically desperate.
Atiku called Tinubu’s recent comments a “reckless tirade” that shows “a troubling pattern of hypocrisy and historical amnesia.” His spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, said this in a statement.
It was said that President Tinubu had criticized Atiku for his qualifications and how he ran the country’s economy when he was vice president.
The former vice president was shocked that a president who has been asked a lot about his own qualifications would try to discredit people who have clear records of public service.
The statement said, “Atiku Abubakar has been made aware of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s most recent reckless tirade, which shows not only desperation but also a worrying pattern of hypocrisy and historical amnesia.”
Atiku’s camp said that President Tinubu’s criticism of the country’s privatization falls apart when looked at closely, since the president had previously opposed the very reforms he now seems to be putting into place.
Atiku had long pushed for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to be privatized and for credible private investors to buy refineries. At the time, Tinubu reportedly disagreed with this.
The statement, on the other hand, said that the current government is in charge of a system that has effectively commercialized the national oil company “in opacity—without clear valuation, without transparency, and with lingering questions over who truly benefits.”
“This is not reform; it’s privatization without responsibility,” Atiku said.
“It’s not our fault that the president can’t read or write. Bola Tinubu went to school in Lagos two years before it opened and then got his degree from Chicago State University.
“If he had gotten a good education, he would have read the privatization records in the presidency or the long, detailed account of these changes written by Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in The Accidental Public Servant. In that book, the privatization program was clearly shown to be a bold and well-planned way to get rid of inefficiency and encourage growth led by the private sector.”
It also said that Tinubu could only have said those things if he didn’t know about facts that were already known to the public and were backed up by reliable sources.
The statement went on to say, “You can’t be against reform when it requires bravery and then carry out a shadow version of it in power.”
