Dele Momodu, the head of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a publisher, has turned down calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to drop out of the 2027 presidential race. He called the campaign against him “unbridled chicanery.”
Momodu was responding to Zekeri Idris Jnr, an activist and Peter Obi supporter, who told Atiku to drop out of the race because he would be 80 years old by 2027.
Momodu said in a post on 𝕏 on Saturday that people who are criticizing the government are not doing so correctly.
The statement said, “You’re wasting your time making videos against the ruling government instead of a man who has never wronged your preferred candidate.”
Idris asked Atiku’s supporters to convince him to step down and support younger candidates in a video that went viral.
“Let him go and bring angels from heaven as his running mate if he wants to. Not even Peter Obi.” Idris said in the video, “We won’t vote for an 80-year-old man.”
Idris also told Atiku to act like an elder statesman and bring together younger candidates, like Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, instead of running for office himself.
In response, Momodu named a number of world leaders who he said did a good job at older ages, such as Donald Trump, Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Muhammadu Buhari, Nelson Mandela, Nana Akufo-Addo, Hillary Clinton, and Joseph Boakai.
He said they “made good use of their age and experience to help their countries.”

Atiku, who ran for president in 2023 as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and lost to President Bola Tinubu, is said to be interested in the ADC ticket for the 2027 election.
