Ibrahima Konaté will leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of his contract this summer after contract talks broke down.
France defender Konate, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m, had been in talks with the club since November 2023. Both sides were initially optimistic about reaching an agreement, with Konate saying after the Merseyside derby in April he was “close to an agreement” and there was a “big chance” he would stay at Anfield next season.
But a gap in valuation and wage demands has stalled progress and talks have now ground to a halt. Liverpool are bracing themselves for the departure of another senior player for nothing after Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah left this summer.
It echoes the situation last year when Trent Alexander-Arnold left for Real Madrid CF just before the end of his contract, after the Spanish club agreed a fee for his early release ahead of the Club World Cup.
Liverpool are starting to look a little short at the back. The only experienced centre-backs in the squad would be club captain Virgil van Dijk – whose deal expires next summer – and Joe Gomez.
The club had looked to strengthen that area after missing out on Marc Guéhi before last September’s deadline day, with the defender eventually joining Manchester City in January.
And Liverpool remain confident in their younger defensive options despite injury concerns. Jeremy Jacquet followed us this summer in a £60m deal after making 21 appearances for Rennes last season, although the 20-year-old missed the final four months of the campaign through injury.
Highly-rated teenage defender Giovanni Leoni also faces a lengthy recovery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury shortly after his move from Parma last year.
There’s a feeling in the club that upgrading other parts of the squad takes precedence over huge wages to keep Konate. Liverpool are believed to have higher priorities than replacing Salah and dealing with the absence of Hugo Ekitike through injury.
Liverpool have in recent years been prepared to let key players leave without receiving a transfer fee. Roberto Firmino left in 2023, and his former manager Jürgen Klopp publicly said he wanted him to stay.
Also departing as a free agent in 2021 was midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, who started all 38 of his Premier League appearances in his final season at the club.
Others like Emre Can, Adam Lallana, James Milner, Naby Keïta, Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also left Anfield with no transfer income coming to the club.
