ABUJA- The Director, Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Sam Amadi, says nobody can stop people from defecting if they think their actions are in line with the provisions of the constitution they signed.

Amadi dropped this comment on Wednesday during a live appearance in an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’.

He was responding to the anti-defection policy rolled out by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, that required candidates vying for elective offices on its platform to sign legal documents that they would vacate their offices if they defected from the party after winning elections.

“The NDC cannot solve a political problem by constitutional interpretation. “The NDC is attempting to address a political issue through a constitutional question but that is not the way to go.

“It is not lawful to prevent people from decamping if they believe that what they are doing is in conformity with the provisions of the constitution they signed.

“If people want to change the political party, they can change it if they have reasons as per to the exceptions mentioned in the constitution. “Under such circumstances the law is as provided,” he said.
