The Arewa Youths Advocate for Good Governance, a political pressure group, has urged President Bola Tinubu to commence a strategic presidential intervention to ensure stability in the leadership structure of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
The Youths on Saturday expressed their fears over the looming leadership vacuum that may be in existence in a short time. Adamu Muhammad Abdullahi, the national coordinator of the group said the “impending leadership vacuum in Nigeria Customs Service” is a concern to the group as the country faces border insecurity.
Abdullahi said the group has been closely monitoring developments within the Service and is gravely worried about the impending retirement of a “significant number” of senior management officers during that period.
“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria is embarking on far-reaching economic reforms. “On such a delicate stage, institutions responsible for revenue generation, trade facilitation and border management need stability, policy continuity and experienced leadership,” they argued.
In its opinion, the NCS has evolved to be one of the Federal Government’s best revenue generating institutions. “It is also at the forefront of the fight against smuggling, securing Nigeria’s borders, facilitating legitimate trade and aiding national security operations.
The youth group said the simultaneous exit of several experienced management officers without a carefully managed transition strategy could create avoidable leadership gaps, disrupt institutional memory, slow ongoing modernisation programmes and affect operational efficiency when Nigeria can least afford such uncertainty.
It called on the President to consider strategic and legal intervention that will guarantee stability in the Nigeria Customs Service and prevent a reversal of the huge gains made in the last few years.
Such intervention may include a phased approach to leadership transition, keeping significant institutional expertise where legally allowed, and ensuring that succession planning is aligned to the national interest rather than the administrative calendar alone, they say.
“We’re not an advocacy group for people. “We are fighting for institutional continuity,” the group said.
“We, therefore, call on the Presidency, the National Security establishment, the Federal Ministry of Finance and other relevant stakeholders to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the possible implications of a mass leadership transition within the Service before irreversible decisions are taken.
They commended President Tinubu’s commitment to institutional reforms and expressed optimism that the administration would continue to focus on decisions that strengthen the country’s economic structure and security architecture.
