Ndigbo Buru Otu Hold Eastern Brothers Club to 1-1 Draw as Unity Football Match Thrills Fans

By Naomi Onome

A keenly contested football match between Ndigbo Buru Otu Association of Nigeria and Eastern Brothers Club of Nigeria ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw, with both teams displaying determination, sportsmanship and the spirit of unity.

The match, played at Abaranje, popularly known as Okerube, attracted members of the Igbo community and supporters who gathered to witness what organizers described as a football event aimed at strengthening unity among Ndigbo.

Eastern Brothers Club dominated much of the opening exchanges, but Ndigbo Buru Otu responded strongly in the second half. Their persistence paid off in the 65th minute, when jersey number 10 found the back of the net to put Ndigbo Buru Otu ahead and send their supporters into celebration.

However, the lead did not last until the final whistle. With about 10 minutes remaining, Eastern Brothers Club won a corner kick. During the resulting scramble in the penalty area, Ndigbo Buru Otu’s jersey number 7, while attempting to clear the ball with a header, accidentally directed it into his own net, gifting Eastern Brothers Club an equalizer and bringing the score to 1-1.

Despite several late attacking moves by both sides, neither team was able to find the winning goal, and the encounter ended in a draw.

Speaking after the match, High Chief Irukanachukwu C. Miracle, a member of Ndigbo Buru Otu Association of Nigeria, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, describing the result as an achievement considering it was their first outing in such a competition.

“We are very happy with the outcome. If we had been given extra time, I believe we would have beaten them. This is our first time playing this kind of match. Initially, we thought they would defeat us, but in the end, we came back and equalized,” he said.

According to him, the football competition was more than just a sporting contest, stressing that it was designed to promote unity among Igbo people.

“This match is bringing unity among the Igbos. The reason this football competition was organized is for all Igbos to come together and remain united,” Miracle added.

Also speaking, Oliver Ikubueze described the event as one of the most memorable days of his life.

“Today is one of the remarkable days in my life. We are happy with the 1-1 result. I pray that God will continue to give Eze Nwokedi wisdom to lead his people. He spent a lot of money to make this event successful and entertained everyone. He even slaughtered a whole cow for the celebration. He is a very nice man,” he said.

In his own remarks, Eze Chika Nwokedi, the Ezendigbo of Ijegun-Ijedodo and Chairman of the Ndigbo Buru Otu Association of Nigeria, said the football match was organized primarily to foster love, friendship and unity among people.

“We want everybody to come together and be happy. That is why I said we should organize this football match because the world is built on love. God wants us to live in peace with one another, and this was meant to be a friendly match,” he said.

Nwokedi announced that the association would host another football competition in August, tagged, ‘The Eze Okpoko Cup’, with a cash prize of ₦1 million for the winning team.

He disclosed that before the match, the opposing team had boasted they would defeat Ndigbo Buru Otu by four goals, but his team proved otherwise.

“They said they would beat us by four goals, but if not for the unfortunate own goal, we would have won the match. Our players have not played football for a long time, yet they performed very well. The next time, we will do even better,” he said.

The community leader explained that the football competition was designed to promote not only Igbo unity but also peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.

“This football competition supports Igbo culture and Yoruba culture. Next year, the prize money will be increased to ₦5 million, and it will not be for only the Igbo community. We intend to involve all the prominent tribes because we want everyone to come together in unity.”

Nwokedi also urged Igbos residing in Lagos to continue living peacefully with their host community by respecting the laws of the state.

“I want every Igbo person to love one another and also love our landlords, the Lagosians. Lagos is not the homeland of the Igbo people, but they have accommodated us and allowed us to live and do business here. That is a privilege we must appreciate. Whenever you live in another person’s land, you must respect the laws of that land. We must continue to obey the laws and live peacefully with our hosts.”

He further announced a personal donation of ₦1 million to support the football initiative, while pledging to increase his contribution to ₦5 million for next year’s edition as part of efforts to expand the competition and strengthen inter-ethnic unity through sports.

Organizers said the football match was conceived as a platform to promote friendship, peaceful coexistence and stronger bonds among members of the Igbo community, while also encouraging cordial relationships with other ethnic groups.

The event ended with cultural displays, entertainment and celebration as participants expressed optimism that future editions of the football competition would continue to strengthen unity and expand community participation.
