Founder of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie has criticized the recent ban on preaching in commercial buses, saying Christians should enjoy the same freedom to freely express their faith as Muslims.
“It is not treating people equally stopping Christians from preaching in buses but allowing Muslims to use loud speakers, freedom of religion must be for all,” Ibiyeomie said at a church service.
‘Leave Christians alone. “Let us allow Muslims. Let us allow Christians,” he said.
“If Muslims can also raise their microphone we are free to preach. There is no guarantee of freedom of religion. No one is warning the Muslims… “Do not stop us from preaching.
He begged journalists not to twist his words when reporting his sermon and that his words should be reported verbatim.
“Don’t change what I said. Say it the way I said it. We desire peace. “Don’t twist my words,” he said again.
“I will never be quiet if Christianity is being humiliated,” Ibiyeomie said, warning against any policy he felt was unfairly targeting Christian evangelism.
I will not live to see Christianity disgraced in Nigeria. Never.
He also alleged that attempts were being made to make Nigeria an Islamic nation but he said such attempts would not succeed.
“They want to make Nigeria an Islamic country. Some people think I joke. It’s coming but it can never be. Nigeria will never be an Islamic country.”
The pastor also observed that if Nigerians can’t freely practice Christianity, some believers would rather leave than compromise their faith.
Otherwise, some of us will go out… If you want it, then do your Muslim part and go. We leave. But if you want peace, practice your Christianity as you practice your religion.
Ibiyeomie also attacked what he described as the silence of many of the Christian leaders, adding that some had compromised their independence because of political patronage.
“You don’t hear most preachers, because they have taken money from the leaders. You go ask your president if I’ve taken a dime from him so I can talk. “You can’t talk to a man and get money from him.”

He also rejected allegations that his criticism was ethnic-based, saying he had always spoken out regardless of who was president.
“I will never be a tribalistic preacher. Never.”
Ibiyeomie also compared the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan with the present government, saying many religious leaders who were vociferous in the past had gone silent in the face of worsening conditions.
Jonathan was here, they were screaming. It has arrived now, all is still. Even preachers stay silent.”
He said that the silence was due to tribal and political sentiments.
“You know why they’re not talking? Tribalism. “
The cleric also said that lawmakers were busy with issues like restrictions on preaching and not on urgent national issues like insecurity, terrorism, hunger and the plight of Nigerians abroad.
Terrorism is an issue. There’s a hunger problem. “Nigeria has a problem.”
“They have not made laws about Nigerians being killed every day. They have not risen and said,
‘South Africa stop this rubbish you are doing to Nigeria.”
Ibiyeomie warned against policies that could ignite religious tensions, insisting that peace can only be maintained where all faiths are equal before the law.
“If you want peace, as Muslims practise their religion, then let Christians practise theirs.”
