The governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, has reacted to Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, over claims of plans by an unnamed politician from Imo State to interfere in the Osun State Governorship election slated for August 15.

Earlier, it reported that Davido who is the head of the youth mobilisation team for the re-election campaign of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke had urged the politician to allow a peaceful, free and fair election.

The singer did not name the person involved, but claimed he wanted to use the poll as a political battleground to demonstrate his power.

He is the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council for the election, Uzodimma, who reacted in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Electronic and Creative Media, Ambrose Nwaogwugwu.

He said Davido should direct his appeal to the Osun electorate who would determine the outcome of the election and not the governor.

Uzodimma said the singer’s comments were out of place, saying his family ties to Imo State did not justify the appeal to the governor.

“It is rather pedestrian for Davido to make such an appeal to the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum because his wife is from Imo State.

“Instead he should appeal to the people of Osun State who will ultimately decide the outcome of the election through their votes.”

The governor said he had always been in favor of a peaceful and credible electoral process.

“The governor of Imo State, who is also the Chairman of the APC National Campaign Council for the Osun State governorship election, has consistently preached peace and reaffirmed his commitment to a peaceful, free and credible election,” the statement added.

Uzodimma said the APC would continue to solicit for the governorship candidate of the party, Bola Oyebamiji, by going to the people throughout the state.

The Imo governor also blasted Adeleke’s government, saying the Osun governor had failed to fulfill the promises he made to residents.

He said that the increasing dissatisfaction with the administration would result in a victory for the APC candidate.

“The reality is that Governor Ademola Adeleke has woefully failed in the discharge of his responsibilities,” Uzodimma said.

“This is why many Osun voters are determined to kick him out in the governorship elections on August 15, 2026.”

“I’ve heard from voters across the state that they are ready for a change in leadership,” he said.

The signals emerging from across Osun State are clear. “There is more and more evidence that a very large number of voters have turned off the current administration and are prepared to embrace a new direction,” he said.

The governor did not provide any specific polling data or other evidence to back up his assessment of voters’ preferences.

Uzodimma further advised Davido to focus on preparing Adeleke for life outside government rather than making what he called emotional appeals.

He said, “Davido should rather than trying to influence Governor Hope Uzodimma with emotional appeals, focus on helping his uncle prepare for life after office as the people of Osun seem prepared to vote massively for the APC candidate.

The governor also ridiculed Adeleke’s much-publicised love for dancing, suggesting that Davido could give him a place in his music group if he lost the election.

“Going by the mood of the electorate, he may as well be out of a political job after the August 15, 2026 governorship election. “Maybe Davido should also start making plans to formally sign his uncle as a dancer in his musical band,” the statement added.
