The Super Eagles’ disheartening 2-1 loss to the Amavubi of Rwanda in their last 2025 AFCON qualifying match on Monday, November 18, has been attributed to captain William Troost-Ekong.
Samuel Chukwueze’s outstanding solo effort gave the Nigerian team the lead in the game, which was played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. The Super Eagles won 1-0.
But things took a sharp turn when the Nigerian team struggled defensively and gave up two goals to the Rwandan team in a short period of time. A well-executed free kick gave the first goal, and a breakdown in defensive unity gave the Rwandan attackers the opportunity to score the second.

The team’s defensive performance left Troost-Ekong, who played as a center-back in the match, feeling deeply disappointed. He said he had not done enough to properly organize and command the backline.
“Yes, you’re right, and I accept responsibility,” he admitted at the news conference held after the game. As the last man in the back and captain, I am aware that we ought to have performed better. I have to make sure that our defense is strong, and today we failed.
He went on to say that although his squad showed some technique and tenacity, set pieces like the free kicks that resulted in the goals can be difficult for any club. However, keep in mind that like with other set-piece scenarios, free kicks may cause problems for any team, and I believe that’s what happened tonight. “I accept responsibility,” he declared.
