Mali’s prime minister, Choguel Kokalla Maïga, was fired for criticizing the country’s military regime.

Alfousseyni Diawara, the presidential office’s secretary general, made the announcement on Wednesday.

“The prime minister’s and the government members’ duties are terminated,” he said.

According to reports, the action was taken a few days after Maïga accused the junta of unilaterally and permanently delaying the transition process, which was originally set to start on March 26, during a rally in Bamako.

Maïga also bemoaned the lack of discussion on the matter, saying he has been forced to rely on news reports for information.

Assimi Goïta, the military chief, had earlier stated that polls would take place in February, but those preparations have subsequently been postponed “for technical reasons” with no updated schedule.

In 2020, Goïta was one of the rebels who overthrew the government, and in 2021, he became the provisional president following another coup.

He then declared that Mali would return to civilian government in March 2022 after a 24-month transition period.

The prime minister who will succeed Maïga has not yet been announced by the government.
