The Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), in Lagos State was engulfed in fire late on Christmas Day.
The fire reportedly started around 10:15 PM on Christmas Day, originating from the institute’s power generator, which was said to have overheated.
Firefighters and officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were quickly mobilized to the scene of the incident.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement signed by him on Thursday.
The LASEMA boss stated:“Following distress calls received via the CRM on the 767/112 Emergency Toll-Free Lines at 10:20 PM, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans and deployed its Response Team from the Cappa Base in Oshodi.

Upon arrival at 10:22 PM, LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team discovered a generator house engulfed in flames.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was ignited due to the overheating of the generator in operation.”
According to the LASEMA boss:“Preliminary investigations conducted by the Agency’s Response Teams determined that the immediate cause of the fire was overheating of the generator engine.
Fortunately, there was no loss of life or injuries reported in the incident.”
The LASEMA boss also disclosed that about 80% of the generator house was destroyed by the fire.
