Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has announced that vandals who were detained by security personnel in relation to the removal of sewage manhole covers on Abuja’s highways will be subject to the full force of the law.
Wike clarified that this kind of action would discourage others.
The minister also threatened to arrest and punish anyone found to have purchased or used the vandalized manhole covers and other damaged public infrastructure for sabotaging the economy and endangering the lives of Nigerians.
This was included in a statement released Monday and signed by Lere Olayinka, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media.
He called their joint efforts “fantastic” and a further reassurance to the citizens of the capital territory that their lives and property are safe, and he praised the security forces for their swift and decisive measures.
Since Nigerians are the facility’s owners and users, he added, “protecting public amenities is, first and foremost, the duty of Nigerians.” He also praised Nigerians for their patriotism in speaking out against the vandalism.

Nigerians themselves are the ones who steal and purchase facilities intended for Nigerians, according to Wike. They exist among us and are well-known. Thus, it’s critical that patriotic Nigerians start exposing them before their bad deeds are committed.
About fifty alleged vandals have been taken into custody for stealing manhole covers in the Federal Capital Territory.
Security officers have collected 25 vandalized manhole covers.
