A number of federal universities, including the University of Abuja, which is now known as Yakubu Gowon University, have had major leadership changes declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
These reforms take effect immediately, according to a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, on Thursday.
The whole governing body of Yakubu Gowon University was disbanded by President Tinubu, who also removed Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi from her position as vice-chancellor.

Yakubu Gowon University has named Senator Lanre Tejuoso, who is currently the pro-chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, as its next pro-chancellor. The pro-chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Senator Joy Emordi, will succeed him in Makurdi.
In Maikudi’s place, President Tinubu named Professor Lar Patricia Manko Yakubu Gowon University’s Acting Vice Chancellor for a six-month term.

In the event that the substantive Vice Chancellor position opens up, she will not be qualified to apply.

At the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu was also dismissed by President Tinubu prior to his term ending on February 14 as Acting Vice-Chancellor.

Since he has been replaced for a period of six months, Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam is not qualified to apply for the permanent post.

The Pro-Chancellor position at UNN has also undergone leadership changes, with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu being moved to the University of Uyo.

The UNN’s new pro-chancellor, Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo, was named by President Tinubu. The same role was previously held by Ojo at the Federal Universities of Oye-Ekiti and Lokoja.

At the Federal University of Lokoja, Ojo will be replaced by Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, who is currently the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo.

Alvan Ikoku University of Education’s new pro-chancellor, Senator Sani Stores, replaces Senator Joy Emordi. A member of the University of Nigeria’s Nsukka Council is Senator Stores.

Furthermore, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka’s current Council Member, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, has been named the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

All decisions on appointments and reassignments take effect right away.

President Tinubu emphasized that these modifications demonstrate his administration’s dedication to reviving Nigeria’s university system via flexible leadership and responsibility.

“In Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, the restructuring aims to strengthen academic excellence and governance,” the statement continued.
