Former Delta State Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa’s aide, Monoyo Edon, who is running for the position of chairman of the Warri South Local Government Area (LGA), has formally resigned from the PDP.

He resigned, citing the party’s “unusual” attitude of rewarding its members and its lack of openness to new ideas as the main reasons in a letter addressed to Allen Mayuku, the chairman of the Obodo/Ubeji 1 ward.

Edon, a former Special Assistant on Media and Publicity in the previous administration, stated that he joined PDP with the hope that it would provide a forum for Delta’s young people and aspirants.

Edon stressed that he cannot continue to be associated with a group that hinders his career, characterizing the party as inhospitable to new progressive ideas, especially in Warri South.

In his letter of resignation, he states: “I am writing to formally inform the party of my decision to withdraw from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), with party registration number 294/04/2022.

“I have been a devoted card-carrying member since 2021 and actively participated in the election that resulted in the election of His Excellency Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori as Delta State’s governor as well as the other four elected posts (completing 5/5 in Ward 1) in the general elections of 2023.

I should also say that I was former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity for a limited period of time.

Because I believed it would provide a forum for young and ambitious Deltans, I voluntarily joined the party in 2020.

“The party gave me permission to run for the chairmanship ticket of Warri South LGA in the 2024 Delta LGA elections.

However, I learned more about the party’s culture during and after the election, which, to be honest, has an odd system of rewards and is intolerant of new progressive ideas, especially in Warri South.

“It is not in my nature to stay in a position that is hostile to my advancement, contribution, and ambition.

“I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to my leaders, Dcn Victor Agbateyiniro and Ewetan Okerentie (former Ward Secretary), for luring me into the party. I also want to acknowledge the other leaders I collaborated with while in the PDP.”
