At the age of 96, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a well-known figurehead of the pan-Yoruba sociocultural organization Afenifere, passed away.
On the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, he passed away quietly at home in Lekki, Lagos State.
In a statement provided to reporters on Friday, the family reportedly confirmed his death.
The announcement said, “He passed away quietly this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at the age of 96, at his home in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria.”
Icon of Yoruba and Defender of Justice
A renowned attorney, former Action Group organizing secretary, and national leader of Afenifere, Adebanjo was a fierce champion of justice and democracy.
Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, his 94-year-old wife, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, survive him.
“We will always treasure his dedication to pursuing justice, equity, and truth,” the family stated. He fought to the end of his life because he firmly believed in and supported a Nigeria that was genuinely independent and forward-thinking.

In order to finalize arrangements for an appropriate funeral, the family revealed that discussions are still going on with Adebanjo’s friends, acquaintances, and other interest groups in Nigeria and abroad. Information about the funeral plans will be made public when the time comes.
Both his country home in Isanya Ogbo, close to Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, and his residence at 8 Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, have a condolence register available.
Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (nee Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo signed the statement on behalf of the family.
