Although Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun is over 60, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is becoming increasingly concerned about his continued service.
Due to alleged age falsification and infractions of service standards, Egbetokun has stayed in office while numerous senior officials have been forced to resign; this has caused internal dissatisfaction.
All of his classmates were formally retired by March 3, 2025, and their posts were filled by senior officers who were thought to be loyal to him.
Internal police sources, however, are wondering why the IGP has not resigned while rigorously enforcing retirement regulations on his coworkers.
Egbetokun has privately acknowledged that he almost lost his job but was spared by First Lady Remi Tinubu’s intervention, according to a source in the force who spoke to SaharaReporters. He is reportedly close to First Lady Tinubu.
The IGP was on the verge of losing his job, until the First Lady stepped in.
A top government official disclosed, “He is now more confident than ever and is making strategic moves to secure his position.”
Egbetokun Takes Action To Dispense AIG Owohunwa
According to reports, the IGP views Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Idowu Owohunwa as a “archenemy” and a danger to his tenure in office, making him the most recent officer to experience uncertainty under Egbetokun’s leadership.

According to sources, Owohunwa has already drafted his letter of retirement and it is anticipated to be released next week following his failure to obtain a promotion to the position of Deputy Inspector General (DIG).
His fate was essentially sealed when Owohunwa was not promoted by the Police Service Commission (PSC).
The appointment of six new Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) to replace those who were recently forced into retirement by police officials was accepted by the PSC, according to reports earlier this week.
