In response, RSIEC declared a new local government election for August 9, 2025.
Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), the commission’s chairman, made the announcement during a stakeholders meeting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. Governor Siminalayi Fubara instructed the commission to prepare for new elections, prompting his announcement.
Governor Fubara is still at odds with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, over control of state political structures.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is now investigating RSIEC’s handling of the October 2024 election.
