The Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has said that Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, and other northern politicians plotted to shorten President Bola Tinubu’s term in office.
As the group announced its support for Tinubu’s reelection in 2027, it cautioned against attempts by self-appointed “leaders of the North” to subvert the zoning principle and remove the President too soon.
In a statement released on Monday, Bunmi Fasehun, the group’s general secretary, charged that Rufai and other northern politicians were attempting to shorten the unwritten agreement between the North and South over power rotation.

The rotating principle, which the entire nation adopted and which has made governance inclusive and equitable since 1999, should be noted by resentful individuals currently demanding Asiwaju’s early removal. For the self-serving benefit of political adventurists like Hameed Baba-Ahmed and Nasir El-Rufai, that principle must not be jeopardized, Fasehun stated.
Over 10 million OPC members and allies, Fasehun emphasized, will not keep quiet while such political actions jeopardize national unity.

“Working against a sitting South African president in 2015 would not erase the historic role that Asiwaju played in bringing the presidency back to the North. A presidential election was won by an opposition party for the first time in Nigerian history.

God utilized Tinubu’s money, connections, and strategy to make it possible through the 2015 and 2019 primaries and general elections, although it was an impossible assignment.

“Clearly, Tinubu rallied his South-West to cast a large number of votes for Buhari in both elections,” the OPC stated.

Likening Tinubu to the late South African icon Nelson Mandela, Fasehun also said that Tinubu was a product of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.

“Like the OPC and our founder, the late Dr. Frederick Fasehun, Tinubu was a driving force behind NADECO, the ultimate platform for our nation’s democratic fight, both domestically and internationally. Tinubu is the first Nigerian president in this Fourth Republic to emerge from the front lines of the fight against military rule, just like Nelson Mandela,” he continued.
