The administration of President Bola Tinubu has been accused of continuing the alleged persecution of Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, which supposedly began under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The accusation was made by Olayemi Koiki, the Igboho spokesman, in an audio message sent on Monday.
“It is unclear why the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration continues to witch-hunt Sunday Igboho. Even today, he is still on
“The wanted persons list,” Koiki explained.
He stated, “We requested that his bank accounts and companies be opened, but they refused.”
“Sunday Igboho’s offence was standing up against the injustice happening in Yorubaland, and the issues he protested against are still prevalent.”
According to Koiki, Igboho is treated with dignity overseas but is still considered a criminal in his own nation.
“When he goes around the world, he is not considered a criminal; just in his home nation. Even when the court ordered that he be reimbursed, no one has done so to date,” he claimed.
Koiki accused the Buhari-led administration of aiming to eliminate Igboho during the contentious raid on his Ibadan home in July 2021, which was carried out by Department of State Services (DSS) agents.
The DSS said that the raid was predicated on intelligence indicating that Igboho was stockpiling weapons. Although Igboho survived the raid, the DSS proclaimed him sought and claimed to have found weaponry at his residence.
After fleeing to Benin, Igboho was apprehended and imprisoned. He was eventually brought before the Court d’Appel in Cotonou on charges of arms smuggling, inciting violence, and advocating for Nigerian independence.
His release by Beninese authorities in March 2022 sparked celebrations throughout the Southwest.
Banji Akintoye, a prominent Yoruba historian and Oodua Nation champion, also claimed that while Igboho was detained, the Nigerian government attempted to push him to abandon his cause.

Koiki complained that, despite court rulings and Igboho’s release by Benin Republic authorities, the Nigerian government is apparently refusing to remove him from the wanted list.
Akintoye stated that the then-Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), serving as a special envoy, paid Igboho a visit in prison and gave him with a document pledging billions of naira in exchange for renouncing his movement for Yoruba independence.
“He refused to sign the document, and Buratai subsequently took it away,” he claimed.
In October 2022, Igboho reportedly wrote to then-UK Labour Leader and current Prime Minister Keir Starmer, seeking the British government to recognise and help Nigeria’s Yoruba secessionist movement.
Despite his release, Sunday Igboho has yet to return to Nigeria, and his supporters claim he is still unfairly persecuted by the authorities.
